Saw something personally satisfying on SKI magazine’s website today. It wasn’t just the slideshow featuring the 15 Best Bootfitters in the US. It was the fact that one of my favorite mountains in the East, Mount Snow, had a boot shop that was ranked among them.
For those of you who don’t know what a bootfitter is in the parlance of skiing: It’s a specially-trained, ski gear craftsman who will tailor, repair or reshape your ski boots to fit properly and more comfortably.
Having put my past boots through a variety of expensive modifications to perfect their fit over the years, I always wondered why several Vermont resorts had easy access to good boot fitting professionals— except for one of the most popular Southern VT mountains among New York visitors. Mount Snow.
For years, weekends at my home mountain were usually interrupted (to the chagrin of my friends) by trekking a half hour north to Stratton, which was always home to one of the best boot shops ever, Green Mountain Orthotics Lab. Mount Snow just never had the renowned bootfitting talent in its vicinity.
You can imagine how inconvenient this was. Going to Mount Snow. Having to detour to Stratton. Get some mods done to my boot. Then having to wait till the next weekend to actually try the boot on-slope.
Now, not only does Mount Snow host one of the best boot shops nationally, they host it right on-mountain. As icing on the cake, their shop is the same franchise as Green Mountain Orthotics Lab (“America’s Best Bootfitters.”)
My feet, as well as those of many Mount Snow fanatics, will surely be happy.
